Offshore Patrol Vessels – Multi-role, Cost-Effective Naval Solutions for
21st Century Operations
Smaller vessels are being proposed as the best way for navies to face
ever-tightening budgets. There is now a huge range of options available
within the small warships market. Is the best option to include as much
technology and weaponry available as you can? What about the vast array
of propulsion choices available? Is it best to opt for maximum
capability or will refits and more economical vessels prove to be the
better option?

*** About the SM-3 missile intercept of the NRO satellite:
*Ned, Sometimes the magic works, eh?
Susan Baker
* Why is AEGIS all capital letters?
Is it an acronym??
Dennis Stokowski
(Dennis, according to Wikipedia: An Advanced Surface Missile System
(ASMS) was promulgated and an engineering development program was
initiated to meet the requirements. ASMS was re-named “Aegis” in
December 1969 after the aegis, the shield of the Greek god Zeus. The
name was coined at the suggestion of Captain L. J. Stecher, a former
Tartar Weapon System manager, after an internal U.S. Navy contest to
name the ASMS program was initiated. Captain Stecher also submitted a
possible acronym of Advanced Electronic Guided Interceptor System
although this definition was never used. While many other meanings have
been attributed to the name Aegis, the name is not an acronym.)
*I feel immensely proud of our Navy's feat.
Charles D. Smith
*** I visited the SM-3 and ESSM guidance section assembly facility at
Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson yesterday, where I had the chance to
talk to the highly skilled workers who put these missiles and their
components together. Grace Polacios told me she knew her job was
important because her son has been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan with
the U.S. Army. I asked Floyd Gonzalez if he actually assembled the
guidance system on the missile that shot down the errant spy satellite
last week. “I tell everyone I did,” he says.
*** This comes from Nancy Rizer at the Naval Media Center, who got it
from Shebrina A. Lewis at OPNAV (N402C):
Its official, DD-214's are NOW Online.
The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following
website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214's online:
http://vetrecs.archives.gov/
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-re
cords.html
This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his
DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for
veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of
documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of
kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online
military personnel records system to request documents. Other
individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard
Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the
requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to
process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask
veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based
application was designed to provide better service on these requests by
eliminating the records centers mailroom and processing time.
Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may
know and their dependents

*** From The Devil's Dictionary:
FREEDOM, n.
Exemption from the stress of authority in a beggarly half dozen of
