New Veterans Memorial, Carlisle Center, Massachusetts

The Town of Carlisle, Massachusetts is situated approximately 20 miles NW of Boston. With a population of 5,000, the town is decidedly quaint with farms, quiet back roads and a New England village center with only one small country store. For years the town has had an old wooden Honor Roll on the Town Common recognizing those residents who served in the military during the 20th century and beyond - 198 names in total. In the fall of 2007, a committee was established to replace the old, rotting wooded structures with something more dignified and permanent. On June 28, 2009 the new Veterans' Honor Roll Memorial will be dedicated. Made of New England granite, the Honor Roll now contains the names of 286 veterans resulting from a comprehensive outreach to the veteran community that included news articles, community meetings and a new website dedicated to all of the Town Memorials (www.Carilsle.org/HonorRoll).

Photo above shows the new Memorial right before the bronze plaques were installed and final plantings. Members of the Carlisle Fire Department (an all-call department), were doing a dry-run with a huge American flag displayed from the ladder truck in preparation for the dedication ceremony.

Old Honor Roll
http://carlisle.org/honorroll/honor-roll-3.jpg

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

On Sunday afternoon, June 28, the Town of Carlisle dedicated our new Veterans' Honor Roll Memorial. It is splendid in its design, elegant in its simplicity and powerful in the statement that it makes to all – especially to future generations. We are proud that it now holds a permanent and significant position on our Town Common.

I was proud to serve on the committee as Chairman of the Dedication Ceremony. During a lull in the weather patterns, before a crowd of 300+ we honored 296 Carlisle veterans in a dignified, solemn and respectful ceremony. With a backdrop of a huge American flag hanging from our Fire Department's ladder truck, Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds, Hanscom AFB served as our guest speaker. Soloists sang The Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful, Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance, the names on the Honor Roll were read off - with many in the audience calling out "Present!" - our Carlisle Minutemen Company fired rounds of honor followed by the playing of taps with an echo from the other side of the hill. It was all very powerful and emotional.

But leading off the memorable day, were Sailors from the USS Constitution who served as Color Guard for the entire ceremony. In their crisp whites, with solemn faces and with absolute precision, they deserve a Bravo Zulu for the tone they set for the entire ceremony.

All my best,

Larry

Larry Bearfield
<?smaller>Co-Proprietor
<?/smaller>
Ferns Country Store
<?x-tad-smaller>"We're right heah in the village center"<?/x-tad-smaller>
<st1:address w:st="on"><st1:Street w:st="on"><?smaller>8 Lowell Road
PO Box 31</st1:Street>
Carlisle, MA <st1:PostalCode w:st="on">01741</st1:PostalCode></st1:address>
<?/smaller><?smaller>m.617.584.5001
www.FernsCountryStore.com
