***  Greater Washington Chapter Surface Navy Association Wounded Warrior
Project

For the past two years, the Greater Washington Chapter of the Surface
Navy Association has conducted a campaign to assist our wounded
shipmates recovering at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda,
MD.  We collected more than 800 DVDs for the Sailors and marines to
enjoy during their recuperation.  The following year we collected funds
and donated 155 portable DVD players.

This year we want to do something very meaningful for those of our
shipmates limited in their ability to get out and around the Washington
area during their convalescence.  We have determined that Operation
Second Chance provides many valuable services to military men and women,
and would greatly benefit from a conversion van equipped too transport
wheelchair patients in and around the D.C. area to attend sporting
events, concerts, and other wise get out and about. 

This is an expensive proposition, but very important for those men and
women who are virtually stuck in the hospital.  We have carefully looked
at Operation Second Chance and are very impressed with the organization
and the services it provides.

Therefore, SNA GWC is seeking to help OSC raise $30,000 to purchase a
conversion van modified by Adaptive Mobility Systems, Inc. (AMS Vans).

insurance, registration, maintenance and operating costs for the van. 

Please be generous, and share this appeal with others who share your
concern for those shipmates who had made a very great sacrifice in
service to their nation and security and freedom everywhere.

Dear Ned,

Thanks for sharing your story — the story of Michael Noeth. I didn't
“enjoy” reading it, because it was bittersweet, but I appreciated it. (Some
day I'm going to figure out a word to use for “enjoy” when that word just
isn't really appropriate. Do you have any suggestion? 🙂

No doubt you already know this, but scientists have discovered that our
sense of smell is absolutely our most powerful sense in terms of the effect
it has on us (even for those people who don't have what we call “a good
sense of smell”).  For instance, apparently we choose our mates, ultimately,
based on their smell.  We can see someone, find them extremely attractive to
look at, but once we are up close and personal, if they don't smell good to
us (and most people aren't even aware of this going on) we are no longer
going to find them attractive.

When I cleaned out my Dad's house after his death, it was the smell of his
belongings that brought him back to me, vividly, rather than photos or
mementos.

In my teens, I lived with a Moslem family in Jakarta, Indonesia,(through the
American Field Service program) as if I was their own daughter.  Indonesians
make and wear batik clothing.  Their batik is the most beautiful and
intricate of all the varieties made by many different cultures.  Also, the
cloth has a distinctive (pleasant) smell to it.  To this day, (I'm 48 now),
if I smell batik, I am instantly transported back to Jakarta, to the house I
lived in, to the bedroom I shared with my Indonesian sister. It is an
incredibly powerful experience.

I share this with you to let you know that I can understand your reaction to
the smell of linseed oil.  A sensitive nose, which you and I seem to share
(since you recognize the source of memories of Michael Noeth) can be both a
curse and a blessing.  Certainly, if there is a bad odor around, it can be
much more difficult for us than for others who hardly notice.  Still, I'm
comforted by the thought that I'll never sleep through my house being on
fire!  But the power our sense of smell has to evoke brilliant memories — 
of both people and places — is certainly a blessing.  I'm sure that Michael
is pleased that when you smell linseed oil, you think of him.

Thanks for ALL that you share with JOTW and DEFCON members.

The primary area of responsibility is providing Marine Engineering support to multiple Shipbuilding Programs.  The candidate must be flexible in supporting a wide range of customer and company systems engineering requirements.  As the Lead Marine Engineer, the candidate will provide technical support to DDG 51 class Ship Design Manager (SDM) of the U.S. Navy's Aegis Destroyer Program.  The candidate will be responsible for technical issues concerning gas turbine engines and propulsion train, self-cleaning seawater strainers, reverse osmosis desalinators, steering gear and gas turbine generators.  The candidate will provides technical review of proposed ship alterations; research and resolve trial card issues; review equipment failure reports, conduct root cause analyses, and propose reliability improvements.  The candidate will participate in ship trails and attend trail card screen sessions to determine responsibilities.  Additionally, the candidate will track ship construction issues and recommends improvements; prepare and review proposals for design changes to assigned systems; develop system maintenance requirements; reviews system technical manuals for accuracy and format and attends technical manual reviews to help resolve deficiencies and review machinery control system signal flow diagrams for accuracy, completeness and format and participated in review meetings to resolve errors.
