4.) Senior Editor (Reports to Editor-in-Chief, Proceedings), Periodicals Group, U.S. Naval Institute. Annapolis, MD
SUMMARY:
We are seeking a high-energy senior editor to join our team, sharpen our authors’ messages, and assist in shaping the editorial direction of our flagship monthly publication, Proceedings, and bimonthly Naval History magazine.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Edits articles for each issue of Proceedings and Naval History. Works closely with authors, many of whom are serving naval professionals, to strengthen and clarify their arguments, sometimes through extensive reorganization and editing.
- Works closely with the art director, design & publication director, and photo editor on art selection and design to ensure an engaging reader experience—both in print and online—for each article assigned.
- Proofreads the majority of each issue of both magazines. Handles special editing/writing projects as directed by the editors-in-chief.
- Participates in promotion of Proceedings and Naval History articles through all facets of online and social media engines. Evaluates incoming manuscripts and entries for annual essay contests, checking for relevance, accuracy, and readability. Analyzes writing and offers suggestions to bring promising authors—including seasoned veteran journalists and historians—into the fold.
- Identifies and encourages potential authors to write on current issues for Proceedings. Builds and maintains relationship with current and future authors.
- Helps to identify conference participants and professional development opportunities for Institute, department, and self.
QUALIFICATIONS: Strong background in editing, writing, and publishing; able to gain an in-depth knowledge of the military, especially the sea services, including current issues, doctrine, organization, weapons and equipment, and history. Solid leadership and organizational skills and public speaking ability. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Adobe In Copy, Facebook, Twitter, web posting using a CMS.
EXPERIENCE: At least five years in editing, writing, and publishing required. Military experience, significant book/article publication, or military journalism/history experience desired but not essential. Interest in naval affairs and history preferred.
EDUCATION: Bachelors degree required. Journalism, English, History, or equivalent preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Adept at English usage and speech. Able to read, analyze, and interpret technical and military-specific manuscripts. Ability to write correspondence and material for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: No special requirements.
REASONING ABILITY: Editorial judgment. Able to advise editors-in-chief on editorial calls and issues that go before the editorial board. Adept at handling authors, members, and others who influence the success of the Institute.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: No special requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: No special requirements. Should be able to attend outside events, as time permits.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must seek and expand opportunities to move into new areas and relationships with individuals and organizations that will benefit and promote the mission of the Naval Institute. Requires constant awareness of and focus on what the entire Institute is doing and creative and resourceful application of experience, talent, and energy to accomplish the mission of the Naval Institute.
