DefCON-1 Your Defense, Aerospace & Health IT Industry Career Opportunities & News Network
It’s not early to consider the B-2 a “classic”, is it?
I remember where I was 9/11/2002, on a soccer field near SAC hq—jaw dropped as a V-formation of seven B-2 stealth bombers silently glide overhead. Meanwhile there is nothing else flying anywhere. In this photo a B-2 Spirit takes off from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., April 16, 2025. Known for its distinctive flying-wing design and low-observable stealth technology, the B-2 is capable of penetrating the most heavily defended airspaces in the world. It can deliver both conventional and nuclear payloads with precision, providing the U.S. with a powerful and flexible global strike capability. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Joshua Hastings)

Very interesting…
Did you know that the world’s heaviest known invertebrate is the “colossal squid?” The creature has been recently filmed in deep-sea waters for the first time. The strange, mostly translucent creature, with eight orange arms and two long tentacles, emanating self-made light, grows to weigh more than 1,000 pounds. It was filmed at a depth of 2,000 feet, near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, north of Antarctica and east of the tip of South America. Unlike the giant squid it is are believed to live even deeper. The giant squid is lighter but longer and is found throughout many of our oceans. Colossal squids call only Antarctic waters home. The expedition was part of the Ocean Census project. Like other species in its family, its opacity passes from almost completely see-through to shades of red. But its giant eyes cannot turn transparent, so it disguises them from predators swimming underneath with light-generating organs that mimic the sparkling ocean above. Its eyes are the size of a soccer balls. It’ s quite a cool animal…See Washington Post full article by Frances Vinall https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2025/04/16/colossal-squid-video/
Thinking about AI…
AI is coming to get you… the increasing use of Generative AI for creating new content, such as text, images, music, and videos is powered by machine learning (ML). Allowing AI to produce realistic and creative outputs, ML is impacting fields like art, entertainment, and design.
Generative AI: AI models generate original content, including text, images, music, and videos for creators and businesses.
AI in Scientific Research: AI simulates complex biological processes, accelerating drug discovery and helping scientists solve previously intractable problems.
AI in Healthcare: AI diagnoses diseases more quickly and accurately, streamline drug discovery, and monitor patients through virtual assistants.
Natural Language Processing: AI understands, interprets, and generates human language accurately, creating more sophisticated chatbots, language translation, and voice-activated assistants.
AI-Enhanced Creativity: AI tools compose music, create art, write articles, and generate movie scripts, augmenting human creativity.
Personalized Services and Experiences: AI creates personalized shopping experiences, recommends content, and customizes services in many industries.
Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics: .AI is developing self-driving cars and other robotic systems, improving safety and efficiency.
Intelligent Process Automation: AI is automating tasks in various industries, leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs.
AI in Cybersecurity AI is now detecting and preventing cyberattacks on individuals and organizations from online threats.
And after all that, remember Generative AI is still experimental…

The Heart of Leadership: Mastering Interpersonal Skills for Team Success Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.” – Simon Sinek In my journey I’ve come to understand that the core of effective leadership lies in the profound understanding of the needs and motivations of our team members. It’s a fundamental insight that challenges the conventional wisdom which places technical skills at the forefront of leadership success. Let’s be clear: technical prowess alone doesn’t make a great leader. What elevates leadership from good to exceptional is the mastery of interpersonal skills—empathy, communication, and the ability to build relationships. These are the tools that truly inspire and engage a team.
Together, through unity and trust, we can transform challenges into opportunities, guiding each other towards a brighter, more connected future. We often encounter a significant issue in the realm of leadership recruitment and promotion. It’s not uncommon to see individuals placed in leadership roles who lack an essential grasp of human-centric leadership principles. This oversight can lead to a disconnection from the team and, ultimately, a failure to harness the collective potential. As leaders, our primary focus should be on building strong, meaningful relationships with our team members. This foundation fosters a collaborative, innovative, and growth-oriented work environment.
To achieve this, we must prioritize understanding each team member’s unique perspective and motivation. By doing so, we create a platform for open communication and genuine connection. This approach is not about diluting our leadership with pleasantries; it’s about recognizing the power of empathy in driving collective success. It enables us to craft strategies and solutions that resonate on a personal level, encouraging a deeper commitment to shared goals.
Moreover, a leader skilled in these interpersonal domains can navigate the complexities of team dynamics with finesse. They’re adept at resolving conflicts, championing collaboration, and cultivating an atmosphere where innovation thrives. This is leadership that understands the value of each voice, encouraging diverse perspectives and fostering a culture of inclusivity…Read the full article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/heart-leadership-mastering-interpersonal-skills-team-success-smcxe/?trackingId=IeGGnO8zTcyZKI8y2EGh1Q%3D%3D
A few Trade Press highlights & lowlights:
Leading AI Government Contractors in 2025: Artificial intelligence is reshaping the operational landscape of federal agencies, driving innovation, efficiency and strategic decision-making across diverse mission areas. Within this rapidly evolving space, top government contractors are stepping up as key enablers of AI-powered transformation. Booz Allen Hamilton; Accenture Federal Services; SAIC; SOS International; Empower AI; ManTech; AutogenAI; Redhorse; LMI; PrimerAI; Oracle Cloud; ECS; UiPath; Core4ce; Invisible Technologies; Seekr; Virtualitics.
Each of these companies exemplifies how AI can be applied strategically to solve complex challenges within Defense, Aerospace and federal agencies.
https://executivebiz.com/2025/03/top-ai-govcons-2025/
Some are large, some are small, but they have at least one thing in common: They are all actively hiring people like you!
Government contractors: It’s time to get comfortable with change: Federal contractors and subcontractors must be prepared to quickly re-evaluate their compensation, hiring and related structures in the coming months and years. Recent litigation has significantly reshaped federal contractor responsibilities. The flux and uncertainty created by those changes has made planning for compliance with these requirements by federal contractors and subcontractors incredibly complex and challenging. Couple this with the litany of changes in related areas — such as project labor agreements, the non-displacement rule, pay equity and Executive Order 11246 — contractors will need to quickly re-evaluate their compensation, hiring and related structures for employees working on federal contracts and subcontracts in the coming months and years.
Federal and state minimum wage: Do not be surprised to see new developments in the ever-evolving saga surrounding the federal contractor minimum wage. Contractors could see a shift toward a state-focused approach, because of the possibility of courts rolling back executive orders and rules targeted at the federal contractor minimum wage and other possible executive action targeted at reining in this annually increasing minimum wage. We have already seen the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rule that the federal contractor minimum wage EO exceeds the president’s power, and pending litigation elsewhere may further jeopardize the current federal contractor minimum wage requirements.
Will they do away with or alter the yearly incremental increases put in place by EO 14026; decrease the federal contractor minimum wage back to align with the more generally applicable federal minimum wage; or reinstate the Obama-era federal contractor minimum wage, currently $13.30 per hour? Practically speaking, any shifts may mean very little to those in states or localities with relatively high minimum wage requirements. However, a shift toward a landscape ruled by state-level wage requirements may increase administrative burdens, requiring contractors to implement significantly different wages for employees located in different states or municipalities.
Additionally, increased wages for federal contractors have set the industry standard for wage payment for years, and contractors may find it difficult to reduce wages while retaining employees in jobs throughout their businesses. While contractors may decide not to increase wages in 2026, it is unlikely that wages in the federal contracting sector will take a sizable pay cut any time soon….See full article: https://www.hrdive.com/news/contractor-compliance-under-trump/742390/
A slice of…”American Demographics”
Do you know…if Americans are getting healthier?
The median age in the US was only 30 years old in 1980, 35.3 in 2000, and 38.9 in 2022. In 2022, 3.28 million Americans died, about 1% of our total population. Nearly 3.67 million people were born.
The top causes of death per age bracket as reported for 2022; Out of 69 million children ages 1 to 17, just over 16,000 died. About 4,900 of those were from accidents, 2,100 by homicide and 1,600 by suicide. Out of 120.5 million people ages 18 to 44, 215,283 died, 83,000 of those were from accidents, including accidental drug overdoses. 22,000 by suicide, 17,000 from heart disease, and 16,000 by homicide. Of roughly 82.5 million people ages 45 to 64, just over 600,000 people died. Around 138,000 people died from cancer, 118,000 from heart disease, 65,000 from accidents, and 34,000 from Covid. Among the 51.3 million people ages 65 to 84, just under 1.5 million died, around 350,000 of those from cancer, 319,000 from heart disease and 93,000 from Covid. And out of nearly 6.5 million Americans over 85, 933,000 people died. Around 249,000 of those from heart disease, 102,000 from cancer and 73,000 from Alzheimer’s.
Accidents are the leading cause of death between age one and 44. Then cancer takes over at 45, with heart disease a close second, and finally at 85 plus heart disease is number one.
Covid emerged in 2020 and reached its peak in early January 2021 with almost 26,000 deaths per week. But as of July 2024, it’s down to only 600 deaths per week.
There have been increasing accidental deaths over the last decade totaling over 227,000 in 2022 and accounting for 7% of total deaths. Accidental poisonings, which include drug overdoses, represent 45% of all accidental deaths. The leading causes of overdoses are fentanyl and meth, with fentanyl overdoses alone growing from just over 3,000 in 2010 to over 74,000 in 2022.
Firearm-related deaths. 55% of suicides were committed by gun and 79% of homicides were by gun. Active shooter incidents, account for just 100 of the total 48,000 gun deaths in 2022. This does not include gang violence or drug-related violence. Firearm deaths accounted for 1.2% of all deaths in 1999 and grew to 1.5% in 2022.
Key health risk factors: smoking, drinking, obesity.
Smoking causes strokes, heart disease, and lung cancer and it’s connected with about 90% of all lung cancer deaths. The most common cancer type and accounted for about 130,000 deaths in 2022. The share of adult smoking tobacco keeps declining, falling below 14% in 2022. Alcohol misuse, including repeated episodes of binge drinking, contributes to liver disease as well as an increased risk of head, neck, esophageal, liver, breast, and colorectal cancers. In 2022, the government characterized almost 17% of adults as binge drinkers. which can contribute to higher rates of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Obesity among American adults increased from 15.8% in 1995 to 33.6%.
Alzheimer’s. As of 2023, 6.7 million Americans over age 65 had been diagnosed with it. How common is mental illness? Around 34% of young adults ages 18 to 25 had a mental illness. For adults ages 26 to 49, it was 28%. And for adults 50 or older, 15%.

Btw, these people are also doing outstanding work… Children of Fallen Patriots. Our mission is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. We are dedicated to serving the families of servicemembers from all branches of the armed forces who have died as a result of combat casualties, military training accidents, service-related illnesses, suicide, as well as other duty-related deaths as ruled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The vision of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation is to ensure that every child of a fallen patriot receives all necessary college funding.
- We believe a college education is the single most important gift we can give these children.
- We believe this is an important investment in the future of America.
- We believe this is one of the best ways we can honor those who died defending our country.
In 1989, five days before Christmas, Sergeant William Delaney Gibbs from the 7th Infantry Division was killed in action during Operation Just Cause in Panama, leaving behind a young wife and an unborn daughter. Our Founder and CEO, David Kim, served with Sergeant Gibbs and was inspired by his sacrifice and never forgot about Sergeant Gibbs or his daughter.
David Kim returned to the United States and founded Children of Fallen Patriots in 2002. Since 2002, Children of Fallen Patriots has grown in its mission and vision to extend peace of mind through college scholarships to Gold Star families in all 51 states and territories, in all branches of the military. Research conducted on behalf of Children of Fallen Patriots found that nearly 25,000 dependents have been left behind by troops who have fallen in the line of duty over the past 35 years. Many surviving families struggle to make ends meet with 53% of surviving spouses making less than $50,000 per year. With no central repository of information from which to find these children, the organization works to find each and every one of these children to assist them in their growing success. https://www.fallenpatriots.org/
