“Seaborne piracy against transport vessels results in annual losses of an estimated $13-$16 billion.”

Conference Focus

Maritime Security in the US has been a focus since 9/11 with increasingly stringent port and border security requirements being mandated.  However recent events have turned attention once again to terrorism in the maritime domain.  The US has over 300 ports of entry across the country and some of the busiest and largest ports globally making the country vulnerable to attack. Global container traffic in the maritime arena has also lent itself to be the perfect disguise for a WMD or dirty bomb that would affect thousands.  In addition international events of piracy have led to an increased focus on the shipping community and subsequent supporting roles various government agencies may have in such a crisis.  As the maritime arena continues to be one of the most vulnerable and complex domains the need for collaborative preparedness and response is essential.

The marcus evans Maritime Security Conference will bring together professionals from industry and government to discuss the challenges involved in protecting the maritime domain.

***  Battle of Midway Commemoration Dinner
Wednesday, 3 June 2009
Army Navy Country Club
Reception 1830
Dinner 1900

This year marks the 67th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway. On June 4th 1942, a vastly outnumbered and outgunned U.S. Fleet defeated the finest of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the waters off a small Pacific Atoll named Midway. Their daring combination of intelligence, tactics, courage and sacrifice forever changed the course of the war and world history.

In 1999 then Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jay L. Johnson announced that beginning with the 2000 observance, June 4 would become as significant as Oct. 13 — the Navy's birthday. “Twice a year, we will pause as a Navy to reflect upon our proud heritage and to build in all hands a renewed awareness of our tradition and history,” Johnson said.

For the past several years the Battle of Midway has been commemorated in the month of June in Washington DC. This year the Battle of Midway Commemoration is being sponsored by a number of Associations and Foundations including Association of Naval Aviation, Naval Historical Foundation, Naval Order of the United States, The Navy League of the United States, The United States Navy Memorial Foundation,  Surface Navy Association, and the Tailhook Association.

For more information and to register for the dinner please visit http://www.midwaycommemoration.org

One other event is being planned to commemorate the Battle of Midway in the DC Area.  The  Naval District Washington will host a wreath laying ceremony at 1100 on 4 June at the Navy Memorial, located at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington DC.  Chief of Naval Operation ADM Gary Roughead has issued a NAVADMIN message about the Midway commemorations here and around the country.   A link to this can be found on the website at http://www.midwaycommemoration.org

DoD Succeeds In Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite

DoD Succeeds In Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite

A network of land-, air-, sea- and spaced-based sensors confirms that
the U.S. military intercepted a non-functioning National Reconnaissance
Office satellite which was in its final orbits before entering the
earth's atmosphere.

At approximately 10:26 p.m. EST today, a U.S. Navy AEGIS warship,  the
USS Lake Erie (CG-70), fired a single modified tactical Standard
Missile-3 (SM-3) hitting the satellite approximately 247 kilometers (133
nautical miles) over the Pacific Ocean as it traveled in space at more
than 17,000 mph. USS Decatur (DDG-73) and USS Russell (DDG-59) were also
part of the task force.

The objective was to rupture the fuel tank to dissipate the
approximately 1,000 pounds (453 kg) of hydrazine, a hazardous fuel which
could pose a danger to people on earth, before it entered into earth's
atmosphere.   Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should
be available within 24 hours.

Due to the relatively low altitude of the satellite at the time of the
engagement, debris will begin to re-enter the earth's atmosphere
immediately. Nearly all of the debris will burn up on reentry within
24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days.

(DEFCON 1 comment:  This was a very difficut target to hit, and thus
very impressive missile marksmenship.  A vast team of experts determined
how the satellite could be engaged with the Aegis Ballistric Missile
Defense capability.  At the end of the day, it was a Navy Sailor, a
second-class petty officer, who fired the missile.)
