It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships.  But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem.  The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid with one ball on top resting on four resting on nine which rested on sixteen.  Thus a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.
 
There was only one problem — how to prevent the   bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations called a Monkey.  But if this plate were made of iron the iron balls would quickly rust to it.  The solution to the rusting problem was to make Brass Monkeys.
 
Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently when the temperature dropped too far the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.  Thus it was quite literally cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.  And all this time you thought that was a vulgar expression didn't you?  You must send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to at least a few and unsuspecting friends.

Colleagues: Please join us for what promises to be an informative and
entertaining presentation.

Lecture: “Stephen Decatur and the Formation of the Navy” by Robert
Allison, author of Stephen Decatur: American Naval Hero, 1779-1820.  He
will discuss the life and legacy of Decatur, the youngest man ever to be
appointed Captain in the U.S. Navy.  Decatur's legendary roles in the
war against Tripoli (1801-1805) and in the War of 1812 were crucial to
the young nation's well-being; his relationship with Robert Fulton led
to the development of the world's first steam-powered warship; his years
as administrator of the peace-time Navy and his understanding of
American politics and culture were crucial to the Navy's survival. He
will be available to autograph copies of his book.

Senior Military Analyst with Modeling and Simulation (M&S) experience and international planning and coordination background as well as an Operations Research and Systems Analysis (OR/SA) education. Experience with multinational, joint and service unique environments as well as working in host nation in Ministry of Defense (MOD) and NATO environments.  Ability to lead diverse working groups and projects to successful completion and document the efforts and results in high level planning and strategy documents.

Responsibilities 
 
1.  Onsite Study Team/Working Group Analysis and Management:
     a.  Provide onsite support as program manager¿s representative and subject matter expert (SME) to lead study team in the planning and conduct of study analysis and training exercises for the NATO CBRN Center of Excellence.
    b.  Conduct and manage working group activities to accomplish established goals.
    c.  Coordinate with COE Director, COE Department Managers, Czech MOD staff, Alion personnel and other sub-contractor support to integrate the support activities to successfully complete the assigned study analysis/training exercise.
    d.   Provide advice to Alion Program Manager, COE Director, COE personnel and Chief, US Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) on the conduct study and training operations.

2.  Oversight and Mentoring of M&S Cell Staff Personnel:
     a.  Provide oversight of the training of the CBRN COE M&S cell personnel.
     b.  Mentor the M&S cell personnel in the conduct of their various jobs and functions.
     c.  Assist the M&S cell personnel in the coordination of study and training.

3.  Training and Establishment of Standard Operating Procedures:
     a.  Lead the development effort of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual that will establish routine procedures for the planning and conduct of activities within the M&S cell.
     b.  Mentor M&S cell personnel in SOP update process.

4.  Program Management Assistance:

Requirements

Required – Possess extensive background in LOFAR and Pulse Analysis,
ACINT Data Collection, event reconstruction and training associated with
the detailed operational employment of Surface Warfare SONAR systems
and/or Surveillance SONAR systems.
Possess a detailed knowledge in Sonar signal processing and system
employment. Possess strong communication, writing and presentation
skills.

Desired – Possess NEC 0416 (ACINT Specialist) qualification and be
Surface Warfare designated. Candidate should be willing and physically

REQUIRED JOB SKILLS AND EDUCATION:    

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or
Computer Science and a minimum of 3 years progressive and responsible
software engineering experience.

3+ years of full development life cycle experience — from architecture
through test and deployment, and cross platform skills.

Experience with the linux operating system environment and using open
source tools.

Essential skills:  Java/J2EE, Swing, C/JMTK, ArcObjects, MapObjects,
ArcIMS, OpenGIS WFS/WMS, Tomcat, Axis1/2, Weblogic, XML, GML, XSLT,
SOAP, WSDL, Struts, JMS, Ant, CVS.

Software development expertise to include object-oriented design and
programming, user interface/front-end development (C/JMTK, HTML, CSS),
business object/component development, and database programming.

Assist the in-house architect in the Web Services/Service Oriented
Architecture (SOA)/Enterprise Server Bus (ESB) space.

Experience with database design and modeling is desired, preferably with
Oracle.

Ability to communicate technical solutions to project management and the
rest of the SOA development team.

Good verbal and written communications skills.
DESIRABLE JOB SKILLS:   

Experience developing Web-based applications based on
model-view-controller (MVC) design patterns and Java frameworks such as
Struts and Spring desired.

The ability to understand software architectures and design from Unified
Modeling Language (UML) diagrams is desired.

Knowledge of automated information processing system design

Experience with open architecture hardware and software computing
environments

Experience with processing segment interfaces and systems software
integration

Travel may be required to various Adaptive Methods offices as well as
client sites.

    I do not understand very well the issue with the 21 days paid vacation and 16 days paid vacation… I mean if we have the same worked days, why whould someone get more vacation days?
